FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Rand Paul was recovering Sunday from five broken ribs after he was assaulted by a neighbor who tackled him from behind at the senator’s Kentucky home, officials said.

Senior Adviser Doug Stafford said it is unclear when the Republican will return to work since he is in considerable pain and has difficulty getting around, including flying. Stafford said this type of injury is marked by severe pain that can last for weeks to months.

“This type of injury is caused by high velocity severe force,” Stafford said in an email to The Associated Press.

Is this some kind of a sick joke? Breaking someone's ribs is a serious assault. Frankly, I think the neighbor ought to be required to pay Senator Paul's medical bills until he has fully recovered. Instead, there likely will be no restitution required to Senator Paul, only a 'state' payment. This is a big part of what's wrong with this country.

Why couldn't he have done it to someone who deserves it like Lyndsey Graham or McCain or Peter King?

The ONLY voice for liberty in the whole of congress and Rand gets this treatment???

That wasn't that long ago either.. Damn...seems like something happens every week now.. I hope hes more careful and mindful of his surroundings in the future.. Im sure he will be.. I cant believe its only a misdemeanor to assault a Senator.. The Bastard who did this should be hung up by his Buster Browns...

While I am sorry to hear of the attack, and wish Senator Paul well, I must take issue with the idea that a Senator, or a police officer, or, for that matter, anyone, should warrant a greater penalty for his attacker than a common person would. The legal penalty for assaulting and injuring a person should be the same for assaulting and injuring anyone else, with no special category created because someone is considered more or less important or significant than another. The law must apply equally to everyone, or the idea of political equality is meaningless.

and I thought it rather ironic that the 'neighbor' is a pain specialist. To break someone's ribs seems more serious than a simple assault, it is potentially life threatening. I would think there should be some difference between a relatively minor assault, such as one that only causes a strained or sprained muscle, to one that fractures ribs.
