WASHINGTON — Republican Mississippi Rep. Gregg Harper announced Thursday he would not seek reelection, becoming the fifth GOP House chairman to hang it up after this year.

But his retirement may not necessarily signal a distress call for Republicans in 2018.

With midterm elections less than a year away, Republicans hope the passage of the recent tax reform package helps push President Trump’s approval rating up as he touts the success of where the economy is going.

Small businesses and sole proprietors will be able to band together under a new federal rule to create employee health plans that would expand coverage options for 11 million uninsured Americans, senior Trump administration officials said.

The Labor Department rule allowing “association health plans,” placed Thursday in the Federal Register, builds on an executive order by President Donald Trump from October.

Colorado lawmakers are resisting US Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ change to the way states deal with legal pot.

On Thursday, Sessions announced he would rescind an Obama-era memo which eased federal enforcement in states that legalized recreational and medical marijuana.

The change allows US Attorneys in states where pot is legal to “decide how aggressively to enforce longstanding federal law prohibiting it,” reports the Associated Press.
