The Justice Department launched a frontal assault Tuesday on a judge's ruling that protected beneficiaries of the DACA program from the threat of its termination in March.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) says his sole focus in Congress is making sure illegal aliens are given amnesty to remain permanently in the United States.

In comments on Monday, Durbin said it is illegal aliens, not his Illinois constituents, who he is working “full time” and around the clock for.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen confirmed Tuesday that her department has asked federal prosecutors to see if they can lodge criminal charges against sanctuary cities that refuse to cooperate with federal deportation efforts.

“The Department of Justice is reviewing what avenues may be available,” Ms. Nielsen told the Senate Judiciary Committee.

A report released by a supposedly non-partisan think-tank has placed blame for the “global assault on democracy” on President Trump’s attacks on the press and “brash” foreign policy as America’s democratic standards “erode at an accelerating pace.”

“Democracy is under assault and in retreat around the globe, a crisis that has intensified as America’s democratic standards erode at an accelerating pace,” a summary of the report released by Freedom House claimed.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders braved the cold Tuesday morning to blast Democrats for holding up negotiations on an immigration bill.

Fox News cohost Ainsley Earhardt asked why the White House has been unable to make a deal on DACA and immigration, and Sanders placed the blame squarely on Democrats.

“Sadly, I think it’s really simple,” Sanders said. “I think Democrats don’t want to see this president be successful.”

President Trump said the Democratic Party is unwilling to work with him on negotiations over the expiring DACA and would let the federal government shut down to get blanket amnesty.

While the Democratic Party hopes to capitalize on its victory in the Alabama special election to win back control of the Senate, the sheer number of seats they must defend, especially in states won by President Trump in 2016, makes the prospect of wresting back control of the Senate a significant challenge at best.
