Philando Castile stopped 52 Times by Police

JD Sat, 07/09/2016 - 16:05

When Philando Castile saw the flashing lights in his rearview mirror the night he got shot, it wasn't unusual. He had been pulled over at least 52 times in recent years in and around the Twin Cities and given citations for minor offenses including speeding, driving without a muffler and not wearing a seat belt.

He was assessed at least $6,588 in fines and fees, although more than half of the total 86 violations were dismissed, court records show.

Venable, a police officer in Nashville, commented on a Facebook post about Philando Castile Thursday afternoon. A woman was criticizing the officer who reportedly shot Castile four times after he informed the officer he was legally carrying a gun and reached for his ID in his pocket. Castile was pulled over for a broken taillight.

A few thoughts on the killing of Philando Castile

The aftermath of the shooting was filmed by Castile’s girlfriend, but the shooting itself was not. As such, I imagine that any debate will revolve primarily around the dueling claims that are made on the tape: As blood soaked through Castile’s shirt, Reynolds said on camera that Castile was legally licensed to carry a firearm and was reaching for his identification when the officer started to shoot.

Politics must take a back seat this morning as we face the horror of five dead police officers, 11 total shot, 6 injured, after a Black Lives Matters peaceful protest in Dallas Texas went horribly wrong.

The Dallas police department said at least two to three snipers were involved in the open assault on the officers Thursday evening during protests over two fatal police shootings of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota.

A fifteenth died in 2001 because of his injuries. Whitman, who had killed both his wife and mother the night before, was eventually shot to death after courageous Austin police officers, including Ramiro Martinez, charged up the stairs of the tower to subdue the attacker.
