Un mois après avoir été invité par J. F. Kennedy à la Maison-Blanche, Jean Daniel se rend à Cuba, et rencontre Fidel Castro. Dans son livre "Le temps qui reste", il raconte ces quelques jours passés en compagnie du dirigeant cubain. Dans cet extrait, alors qu’ils déjeunent ensemble, ils apprennent, en direct, la mort du président américain.
