Whether it's an ounce of gold or your wallet or a safe or a gun, ammo, vehicle, bank account, water  supply, food supply, electrical supply etc., the same philosophy applies.

In other words, have some redundency in your life to account for losing something which would mean losing everything you own of that particular item or valuable asset.

Ideally - for those who can afford it - a second dwelling, far from your main dwelling, would be great.

Or how about land ownership in even another country?

In the event of everyting from natural disasters to political or civil unrest or the breakdown of an organized society, those prepared will be left in a much better position - even possibly being the difference between life or death in some scenarios.

I'm not one of those who can afford "such luxuries of redundence" but redundency will most likely help you in your day-to-day existence for much more likely scenarios like...

1. Locking yourself out of your car is no big deal if you have a seperate key on you or stored on the outside of the vehicle.

2. That same principle applies to locking yourself out of your dwelling.  Keeping a key hidden somewhere (they even make fake rocks to hide a key in) would take a lot of hassle out of locking that door with your keys inside.

3. Having your only credit card hacked or lost is a real pain if you don't have another card to back you up while you resolve things.

4. Having your wallet stolen - or lost - would be a lot more painless if it's a secondary back-up wallet with just cash and some fake credit cards in it while your most valuable wallet with your driver's license, credit cards, conceal-carry permit, health info and other important documents is tucked safely into another part of your clothing.

5. Maybe a cheap phone if you are travelling to strange places wherein if you lose it, it's not as big a deal as losing you very expensive main phone.

6. One of my favorites -  A LAND-LINE in addition to your cell phone-  in case the cell towers go down or you lose electrical power and can't charge your cell.  Land-lines work through power outages and most other interruptions.

The list of redundencies to consider is endless.

Airplanes have tons of them for almost any conceivable prolem in flight from having two pilots to being able to fly with just 1 engine and having back-up systems if hydraulics fail.

So give some thought to how many ways redundencies could make your life easier, safer or indeed even survivable in a worst case scenario.
