When I heard about the film, I read a news story and reader comments about the controversy. The story was snarky, and the comments were brutal. Not being able to restrain my natural inclination to dispute false statements, I found myself sucked into an on-line argument for two days with someone who said she was a nurse. Never a good idea to argue with a medical professional unless you are very well informed because they will bury you with terminology.

I had always accepted the idea that Dr. Wakefield was involved in sketchy business. The nurse kept referring to Wakefield's fraud, and the argument seemed to hinge on that one incident. Not knowing anything about the original study or the debunking, I decided to research it. Not the way I thought I'd spend my weekend. I found the Brian Deer article that started it all, as well as a subsequent article that he wrote after Wakefield's trial. It was devastating to Wakefield's position. I immediately felt embarrassed for ever having sympathized with the vaccine/autism position. But, before committing a mea culpa on-line, I wondered if anyone had ever answered Brian Deer's article.

What I found was a point by point refutation by JB Handley. The fraud, it seems, was on the part of a cherry-picking journalist who juxtaposed information that made discrepancies seem to be fraudulent. What I learned was that Wakefield was never charged with fraud or falsifying his data by the medical court. Indeed, during his 217 day trial, his research was not contradicted and all of the key points that Deer made in his expose were debunked by the evidence submitted and accepted during the hearing. What Wakefield was convicted of was unethical practice for having done tests and exploratory surgeries on children that the medical board deemed unnecessary. Wakefield argued that had he not done those tests and surgeries, he would have been liable for malpractice. The rest of the story is that one of the other doctors who lost his license over the study has recently been exonerated in a British court for exactly the charges leveled against Wakefield. The implication is that Wakefield would be exonerated, too, if his malpractice insurance would have included legal protection, which he said it did not.

So today, I am better informed. I am not anti-vax, though I am as always skeptical of degreed 'experts'. Vaccines have been effective in reducing the spread of viral infections, but it is not clear that it has been an unmitigated good when one looks at the collateral damage that may have resulted to an entire generation of kids.

I'm looking forward to seeing VAXXED. I don't think Big Pharma will be able to suppress it forever.

We have a nephew that is autistic too. He is a math genius. Can't stand elevators or balloons as these scare him. But he can sit and play poker like a master from a very young age. Isn't this amazing?
