ONLY 5 OF THE ORIGINAL STATES HAD BANNED SLAVERY BY THE TIME THEY JOINED THE NEW UNION
THEY ARE (IN ORDER OF WHEN THEY ABOLISHED SLAVERY)...
1. PENNSYLVANIA - BANNED SLAVERY IN 1780 (JOINED THE UNION 12-12-1787)
2. MASSACHUSETTS - BANNED SLAVERY IN 1783 (JOINED THE UNON 2-6-1788)
3. NEW HAMPSHIRE - BANNED SLAVERY IN 1783 (JOINED THE UNION 6-21-1788)
4. CONNECTUCUT - BANNED SLAVERY IN 1784 (JOINED THE UNION 1-9-1788)
5. RHODE ISLAND - BANNED SLAVERY IN 1784 (JOINED THE UNION 5-29-1790)
These were the only TRUE LIBERTY states who believed ALL men are created equal.
I respect those states that had abolished slavery while the others joined the new union basically ignoring our founding docuuments which guaranteed EVERY person their God-given rights to Life, Liberty and their Pursuit of Happiness.
South Carolina in particular fought to keep their slaves, and it was they who threatened NOT to ratify a new union of states if slavery was abolished.
Thus the slavery compromise was made, the "3/5 Clause" was witten into the Constitution, and 8 out of the 13 new states were allowed to keep their beloved slavery.
It was the most egregious breech of liberty ever known to the United States and even ENGLAND - who we broke away from - abolished slavery before the U.S. did...and they did it WITHOUT a Civil War.
Here are the 8 states which chose to keep slavery as they moved from being individual colonies to the new union known as the United States...
Delaware, New Jersey, Georgia, Maryland, South Carolina, Virginia, New York, North Carolina
I might add that the first COLONY to abolish slavery was Vermont - which did it in 1777.
But they were not one of the original 13 states.
They were the 14th state to join in 1791, but AFTER the new union had been created.
