After reading Sam's article/critique over at Gawker.com I found his example of an 'analogy' to be quite misguided. Rand said the following: “Let’s say we had a terrible president that you didn’t like from another party and that president said, The View, oh you should hear the things they’re saying on The View! We should limit their speech, we should register the journalists, and then we should have an approval board…and that’s silly! We would all be opposed to that… but that’s the danger of letting a president make the rules.” Analogy: a comparison between two things, typically on the basis of their structure and for the purpose of explanation or clarification. Sam, you are correct in your use of the word analogy. However, it is definitely not the worst analogy in history as you carelessly state, and arguably for someone with a better capacity for critical thought than yourself. Rand is making the analogy between the 1st and 2nd amendments to the United States Constitution, in case you couldn't understand the point in registering journalists (if you can call yourself one) as similar to registering guns. The registration of journalists would be an infringement on their first amendment right to free speech and freedom in their own press, as it would be legislation that 'infringes' upon the amendment and right itself. The registration of guns is also an infringement of a right, namely the one to be protected under the second amendment. If you as a law-abiding journalist had to register in order to act as a journalist, would you be writing this lame article? As Rand Paul said, he is not against background checks, but he is against registering his guns beholden to some governmental bureaucracy. It is a point of the second amendment that the government does not know and should not know/be concerned with who bears what type of gun. The government by it's disgraceful representatives is supposed to uphold the right to bear arms without the infringement of requiring law-abiding citizens to register their 'private lives' under the guise of safety and some enlightening means of control. Peace and Love always.

to clarify, it is that Rand is saying, that the President has no power to alter the constitution, whether it be the 1st 2nd or any amendment, and to do so legally would require a long and tough process that the majourity of the country would have to agree upon, ie, it would never happen.
