Ron Paul Liberty Report: Will Congress Save PATRIOT Act...And Does It Matter?

Dr. Paul weighs in on the future of the Patriot Act. He talks to Norm Singleton from Campaign for Liberty June 4th is the deadline and there are 4 basic possible outcomes:

  • They could let it expire
  • They could pass the reform bill "The US Freedom Act" (just like the Patriot Act it's name is deceiving)
    • It sounds good but could actually be worse than the Patriot Act
  • Or, they could reauthorize the original Patriot Act

Currently they are just 3 votes away from bringing the US Freedom Act to the floor.

Norm points out a better alternative to the Patriot Act is the 4th Amendment to the Constitution stating that:

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects,[a] against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Judge Napolitano pointed out several days ago that it may not matter what happens to the Patriot act because there is an existing executive order that will allow the NSA spying to continue.  The only way to overturn that is through congress stepping up and making a contradictory law or a new president to be sworn in who will reverse that executive order.

But I disagree that this whole debate is just for show.   Patriot Act may be just the first step leaving more work to do in it's wake.  However, anytime we can discuss our rights and get people to understand their importance and why they need to be protected, we further ourselves down the path of restoring our constitution as it was intended and securing the peoples rights.

We win this fight ultimately through public opinion.  Every effort should be continually made to make people aware of what is going on in this country.

I leave you with this question:  If Obama wants the "Us Freedom Act" pass and likes it so much, then how in the world can it be good?
