MIT Professor Dan Nocera believes he can solve the world’s energy problems with an Olympic-sized pool of water. By identifying  a simple technique for powering the Earth inexpensively, Nocera and his research team are using the sun to split water and store energy - making the large-scale deployment of personalized solar energy possible.

Another interesting project by Nocera(*): http://video.mit.edu/watch/daniel-nocera-describes-new-process-for-stori...

and in my region during the highest energy (electricity) consumption month of August (assuming I'm leaving everything on) I would need a quart of water a day using that system. I would like to know where is the excess going?

it might go into the atmosphere as water vapor or helium gas. The other possibility is that water is being used as a hydrolysis reaction to break the chemical bonds.
